Want to create a list of all things you have read, watched, used or otherwise own - categorized using tags, rated and review them - and obviously share them with your friends?

Then check out ShelfShare. It is a simple application hosted on google app engine which will allow you all that and more - like exporting all your ratings and reviews using a CSV file, or subscribe to the shelves of your friends using RSS feeds.

I would love to receive feedback if this looks useful, or what would make it useful :)

Thanks to gerhard for testing it as a first user :)
Hey, we have Signatures !!! Great, isn't it ? ;)
I have just uploaded my first perl module to CPAN! :)

It is called GPS::Garmin::Connect and provides users with a very simple API to download their own activities from connect.garmin.com. This is the same code i am using for my list of runs.

Unfortunately Garmin has not yet released a public API to do this (and it doesn't look like it will in the near future) - so this module authorizes using the default login form and than uses a simple JSON call to fetch the data (just like Garmin's flash interface). It wouldn't be hard for Garmin to break the interface, but hopefully they won't mind that people actually use their own data...

Kernel panic on Mac OS X

2009-02-14 16:11:13

I already had enough kernel panics on linux (nice 80x25 console with backtrace) as well as enough blue screens on windows.. (everyone knows how this looks?), but i always felt as if i'm still missing something..

Now, after experiencing a kernel panic in Mac OS X 10.5 i finally feel completed :)

mac os x kernel panic

(yep, that's a windows running in virtualbox and virtualbox was probably the cause for the crash.. but .. anyway)

So, what's next? How does a kernel panic look on FreeBSD? anyone knows? (yep, i'm not really interested enough to google it)

ORF Skichallenge 09 finally over

2009-02-08 12:53:12

After six long racing weekends the ORF Skichallenge 09 finally came to a close.

I finished on place 4 241 in the world cup of 5 races, and on place 12 151 in the final championship (in which i obviously invested not enough time :( ). Unfortunately i forgot my ranking in the last two years, which is why i am now archiving it here :)

I just helped to launch another forum based on SCT: The Django Forum. As last time with http://django-resource.de we were able to automatically migrate all forum categories, users and posts without any hitches.

After managing my own email server for many, many years i finally decided that it was completely pointless..
Since the inception of gmail i haven't used my own @sphene.net addresses anyway, so i moved all of my domains which had mail services to google apps. (ie. poul.at, poul.name, sphene.net, yourhell.com)

No more 100-items long mail queue, no more getting black-listed because my server got hacked and used to send spam, etc.

My very own PDA "history"

2009-01-25 11:31:48

I got a bit nostalgic when i thought about my old Palm Pilot... so i searched for my old PDAs and lined them up against my iPhone :)

I always wanted a PDA to play with, even though I never needed them :) (Why would you need a PDA as a 10-year-old anyway?)

  • Casio Digital Diary SF-4000
  • Palm Pilot Professional (Which.. didn't quite survive me, so the one pictured is my brother's Palm Pilot Personal :) )
  • Palm Vx (The best Palm ever, imho. Let's see how the Palm Pre turns out...)
  • iPhone 8 GB (Finally my dream came true about merging mobile phone and PDA .. why ever it took so long to get this done)

Hopefully i can soon add an iPhone 3G to that list. This would make my current iPhone the shortest-lasting "PDA" in my collection :)

I completely missed the struts 2 release 6 days ago (i guess it didn't even make it to slashdot?) - so maybe struts 2 is not completely dead?

This release should contain two of my patches for the portlet plugin: WW-2678 and WW-2720. So i should finally head back and try if my application runs with a released version :)

I just discovered that google is stopping development of google notebook - which i really like to use (since recently). - That's perfectly fine with me .. at least they just stop development (i haven't seen any improvements for a while anyway :) ) and don't put it offline .. but.. what strikes me is this:

In the announcement about stopping development they list a few alternatives.. like 'Google Bookmarks'. So .. what happens when you log in to google bookmarks ?

"Check out a better way to organize your bookmarks using Google Notebook" (I never understood how you could replace google bookmarks with notebook .. but anyway..)

I always thought google bookmark would die first.. since this message appeared for quite some time now .. so what went wrong here ? (i guess google bookmark just fits better into the search wiki and google web history features ?)

Why We Suck

2009-01-14 20:41:58

If you think you can only get all your news from The Daily Show - you're wrong.. You can occasionally also find good books advertised on it :)

Why We Suck is Denis Leary's take on people's laziness and stupidity and is a great read if you don't mind his writing style :)

So if for example you are pissed about people complaining about the winter (or anything else) you will find some fun common sense opinions in this book:

A few years back, doctors announced the "discovery" of a new disease called SAD - seasonal affective disorder. Victims claim the symptoms begin sometime in September and often last until March or April and include depression, despair, misery and guilt combined with a desire to oversleep or extreme napping as well as overeating.

I'm sad to say that - in THIS doctor's estimation - SAD is not a disease. It's called WINTER, asshole. It happens every year right after the leaves fall off the goddam trees.

And you are not a victim - you are a fat, human sloth who wants to suck down boxes of Twinkies [..]
[..]
Here's my prescription: get off the fucking couch and buy a set of skis. Or skates. Better yet - buy both. And don't eat the yellow snow.

Case closed.
[..]
I'm tired of the denial. I'm tired of the fat the loud the lazy and the stupid.
