I just accidentally found out that skype allows you to edit past messages using a regex (or at least a perl like edit syntax ..)

i just wanted to fix a past message like i always do.. and entered:
s/m/r/

and wondered why it wasn't sent.. when i discovered that it actually fixed the above message :) (luckily.. i didn't use much m's in that line)

you can even find that feature mentioned on the web.. although no idea if there is an official documentation ?

Well.. installing linux does not sound scary to me for the last decade .. but this time it turned out to be a bit more complicated than anticipated.. not because of linux but because there was no way to boot from an external USB cdrom or USB memory stick (or at least i was too dumb for configuring it in the BIOS)

anyway .. luckily there still was a ide cdrom drive "lying around" in an old dell PC .. this is all easy enough .. but it just looks too crazy ... (since the cdrom drive's power still came from the dell pc)

but the linux installation itself went smoothly :)

Sascha Korth the owner of http://django-resource.de and myself have migrated the old forum which was based on a PHP forum to a django forum based on SCT.

This allows us to customize it for our needs - for example there is now a way to extinguish between answered and not-answered questions so we make sure that no more django question are unanswered on the forum. :)

AJAX usually makes life easier (or at least quicker) but when an error happens everything dies.

I entered a somewhat bigger bill into billmonk and with just one click added a group of about 20 people to a bill item.. which i obviously didn't wanted.. But that's OK .. i could have removed it, if it was not for an error which occurred because one of the people in the group were already added to my bill.

The problem is that i now have 20 people in my bill which aren't associated with any item and which i can't remove.. but they are in some way sharing the tip :) without an ajax interface i could simply fix the error or reopen and edit the form. But i have no idea how i could reopen a bill that wasn't saved before..

anyway .. at least now i know that billmonk is using postgresql :)

Garmin has long promised to provide a Web Service API to fetch the last "activities" from their Garmin Connect website. Unfortunately it does not seem to be of any priority to them.

But luckily thanks to AJAX it is really easy nowadays to understand data - a 5 line perl script by using HTML::Form for the login, fetching the data through a simple GET request and JSON->new()->json\ToObj(..) to parse the response.

I someone miss the times where you had to use multi-line regular expressions to find something in an ugly HTML file :)

Anyhoo - you can see the result at https://herbert.poul.at/wiki/show/Running/

Upgraded iPhone firmware to 2.0.2

2008-08-30 13:44:10

I finally decided to update my iPhone to the latest firmware version. Basically because after upgrade my macbook pro to leopard it wouldn't show up in iTunes. I figured it probably was because I was running a very old version (1.1.1) or the jailbroken iPhone was ignored on purpose..

However, I hooked the iPhone up to my windows PC, created a backup and restored/updated to the latest firmware version.
The next 2.5 hours i went back and forth between my mac and windows to find a way to get the iphone unlocked and jailbroken. (I have tried to restore it on mac after creating a new image with Pwnage 2.0 which got me a few Error 1604 and Error 6 - whatever they mean). But it finally worked on windows using Winpwn 2.5 beta in expert mode (by increasing the partition size to 700 MB - as stated in the FAQ .. but wasn't done by the basic mode. weird - without doing so the app would just crash without any output).

In the end.. I'm pretty amazed it actually worked.

Btw. I still had the problem that the iPhone wasn't showing up in iTunes (the weird thing is... It showed up in the DFU mode after the restore, but not after it was jailbroken again) - The simple solution. Simply download the latest iTunes from the apple website and install it.

Too Many Social Networking Sites?

2008-08-07 23:02:57

I just tried to collect all links to my social networking profiles.. so far i have:

anyhoo.. none of those networks made me more social, which is probably my fault .. but i still hope for web 3.0 to fix that by introducing some kind of open social networking standard - how about socialgraph ? sounds good, but i was too lazy to try it out yet (since it isn't used by .. well .. anyone ? not even orkut)

feel free to add me on any of those networks.. for whatever reason ;)

(btw. little advice to anyone encountering new social networking sites: do not trust them. Especially not with your email contacts. My shame i trusted "yaari": http://svn.haxx.se/users/archive-2007-10/0546.shtml.)

My newest project: 'Treez'

2008-07-30 16:10:09

I just finished putting up the website for my latest project called Treez.

It will be a open source version control monitor and changelog manager similar to "CVS Monitor" which was not improved since a while and whose website has vanished a while ago.

Above the features of CVS Monitor (most of which are already working) Treez will support multiple repository types (currenlty CVS and subversion) and allow users to create changelogs based on version control commits.

Browser usage

2008-04-21 16:05:35

It seems visitors to my website http://sct.sphene.net are not really representative. Or did I miss that Internet Explorer is now on 4th place behind Firefox, Opera AND Safari :)

One year of SCT !

2008-02-23 20:50:44

I just realized that Sphene Community Tools (My currently most active private project implementing a django forum and wiki application) is already one year in development. This finally removes the "Short source control history" - warning on it's Ohloh project page.
